Life as a CASS Leader in a Fintech: David Lumer 🤖
In the 10th edition of the JCR Journal, we speak to David Lumer ACSI about life as a CASS leader in the Fintech world.
David spent over 20 years working in Investment Banking before making the move into a Fintech leading the CASS function. All of David's thoughts and opinions below are his own.
How have you found working in Fintech?
To be honest, before joining Freetrade, I had no idea what to expect after 20 years in Banking. It has been a completely positive experience over the 3 years so far, especially in a rapidly growing business. The work is just as difficult but feels so much more rewarding because delivery is fast and results are so tangible. Each person really does make a difference towards our company goals.
What are the main benefits to working in a dynamic, ambitious company?
It makes working life so much more interesting. I can get my teeth into so many different projects across the business, both with my CASS experience but also using experience from other roles I had in financial services. Ambitious companies at this level become infectious, because everyone at the firm has a key part to play and makes a noticeable contribution to overall success.
What has been the main focus from a CASS perspective since joining a Fintech?
Wow, where to start, I could go on for ages on this one. But mainly it was about putting the pieces together. The foundations were there, we had core policies, and governance, but initially it just needed an experienced hand to join it all up and get everyone in the firm thinking about CASS in the right way. Plus some solid recruitment and new systems. We have built a great relationship with Grath which has been a bit of a game changer.

How have technological advancements impacted CASS over the last few years?
From our perspective at Freetrade, I still find it crazy to think that I press a few buttons on the app and share orders are already flowing through our RSP network. Orders to move money follow and FX trades are triggered with not much other than a bunch of APIs flowing data. The movement of assets is so quick. And of course, this opens up the whole playing field for everyone.
What 3 things would be useful considerations for anyone looking to move into the Fintech sector?
Be ready to learn fast, be agile and open to change, and embrace the journey. It's a fun ride.
A huge thank you to David for his insight into life as a CASS leader in a Fintech💡
