Be Like Jamie Lee Curtis. Be a Cheerleader

I'm a sucker for awards shows. I love the fashion. I love the speeches. I love all of it (well except for Will Smith slapping Chris Rock last year at the Oscars. I didn't love that.) So it will come as no surprise that I watched this year's Golden Globes, ready to cry at the heartfelt speeches and fan girl over the fashion.

When the winners were announced, the cameras zoomed in on the winners, which as a former TV news producer, I wholeheartedly approve of. And when Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the cameras also captured Jamie Lee Curtis' unforgettable reaction. I watched Everything Everywhere All at Once and was excited that Yeoh won too, but maybe not as excited as Curtis.

Curtis also posted a story about this on Instagram with the perfect caption.

Now mind you, Curtis was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and didn't win, but looking at the photo above, you'd be hard-pressed to know that. She's the ultimate hype girl and Curtis is exactly whom I want in my corner. Too often though, in work, women don't have other women cheering them on like Yeoh has Curtis.

I've been pretty lucky and worked with plenty of women who have not only supported me but have acted as my Jamie Lee Curtis, cheering me on when I succeed. I'd like to think I'm a cheerleader who readily celebrates the wins of my female colleagues, but if I'm honest, I don't always do it. I can get jealous and think why not me when I see others getting promotions or recognition, but in reality, it's not about me. It's about the person who very likely did the hard work in order to earn the raise, promotion, or recognition.

While I cherish all my cheerleaders, I also remember the women who've done the exact opposite, actively trying to either sabotage me or making me miserable. Both feel bad. I don't know why so many women feel like to get ahead in their careers, they have to tear others down. It doesn't have to be that way.

I'm not one to make resolutions, but this year I'm going to try and be more like Jamie Lee Curtis and be a cheerleader for my co-workers. Just don't ask me to do any cheer routines. I've got zero rhythm and zero coordination.

What a photo - she rocks! Far more rewarding to celebrate the achievements of others than your own.
