I have read quite a few posts and comments in response to tips that Brigette Hyacinth or Will posted. She has a multitude of tips specifically for resume and interview tips. I noticed that quite a few people responded with negativity and skepticism about LinkedIn.

Now, I do think it's fair to put out there that LinkedIn requires a network and it's more intended for recruiting executives or higher roles. But, don't despair, I'm not a director or CEO and I found jobs on LinkedIn. I'd like to provide you with a few tips to help you with making the most out of LinkedIn for job seeking.

I take it from a client perspective with a sales mind and sharing these tips with you from this view:

#1 Consistently Engage with Content

I can't tell you enough the importance of consistency in your engagement. It's so important for you to read and engage with the author. But, make it a value-adding engagement. Posting "Thank you" may not be enough depending on the context.

#2 Add value through contributions

In whatever you are engaging or posting on LinkedIn, it needs to add value. If you watch a TED talk about something you're interested in, then post something value-adding about that. It's that simple: add value.

#3 Demonstrate your knowledge in a focus area

Building your credibility within your network is so important. You need to demonstrate that you're capable. You can achieve this credibility by posting value-adding content. You can back it up with certifications or training and publishing those certifications. Bear in my mind one thing: experience trumps theoretical training. You have to demonstrate a track record.

#4 Share your experience and be relatable

Nobody knows who you are. You need people to get to know who you are as an individual. You can do that to whatever extent that you like. A hiring manager or recruiter may want to check what you're doing and what you have to say about yourself and your experiences.

#5 Follow industry leaders and recruiters

You can do that and get to know what the industry is doing as well as what kind of jobs are on the market. Naturally, jobs might be very region-specific, but there's nothing wrong with trying and aspiring for more.

One last nugget for you is to define your goal and consistently engage with the relevant people to build your network and personal brand.

Final Thought

LinkedIn, like anything, takes work done consistently. Be patient and persevere, you will hook your whale.
