Making a Promotional Video for a Motorcycle Racer

Recently, motorcycle road racer Ben Gloddy released a video to promote his career that has gotten nearly 4,000 views on Facebook. In 2018, Ben was named Rookie of the Year in the Loudon Road Race Series and became the youngest rider ever to get an expert license in the LRRS, Just last year alone Ben racked up 46 podium finishes with 24 victories. In preparation for his first year riding with the Quarterley Racing On Track Development team in 2019 alongside double AMA Nicky Hayden Horizon Award winner Dallas Daniels, 2018 FIM Women’s Motocross Latin American Champion Jamie Astudillo and dual Championship Cup Series title holder Teagg Hobbs, Ben and his family decided to make a video titled, "Who Is Ben Gloddy?" In the interview below, Ben's mother Christina Day reveals why they made the video, how they went about making it and what they hoped the results would be.

Who came up with idea of doing a video?

Christina: Pretty much all of us, Ben, me and his stepfather.

Did you do the video yourselves or did you have someone else do it?

Christina: We decided we would be better off having a professional do it, and we chose a local video company, Purple Finch Productions.

How did you go about choosing someone to do the job?

Christina: I work at a real estate company and the owner’s daughter said the real estate office had been contacted by Jonathan Stallsmith of Purple Finch Productions about doing drone footage of some of the properties we had for sale.

Did he have any experience doing sports videos?

Christina: He did. He had worked at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and was also previously with the San Francisco 49ers. It turned out that he had already done a video interview with Ben last June and he realized when we started talking about this project that he already knew us. He had access to a lot of videos from NHMS and ended up taking the Supermoto footage of Ben that’s in the final video.

What was your first step after deciding on the video producer?

Christina: We started gathering video clips from everywhere and got those organized in about two or three weeks. That was last November.

Did you give Jonathan a lot of details about what you wanted in the video?

Christina: No, we really didn’t give him any instructions. He did all the editing and the first version he gave us was great. We posted it on Facebook the day after Christmas.

What did you hope to accomplish with the video?

Christina: We wanted to generate some recognition of Ben because he’ll be new to MotoAmerica.

Did you accomplish that?

Christina: I think so. The video has gotten almost 4,000 views on Facebook alone and all the comments are positive. It’s been shared a lot and people mentioned the video when we went to the ice races this winter. The results are way more than anything we’ve done on our own.

Do you use the video anywhere else?

Christina: We include it with every sponsorship proposal. Based on the video, a local business owner is thinking about sponsoring the Quarterley Racing On Track Development team. He and his brother used to drag race cars so he’s into motorsports.

Are you planning any more videos?

Christina: Yes. We’re already talking to Jonathan at Purple Finch Productions about doing another one this June. The plan now is to do two videos a year.

Will the next video be similar to his one?

Christina: It will be more focused on Ben’s experience with his new team.

I was at a WERA race weekend about 1994 when a hotshot kid about 15 was killed while leading a race at Nelson Ledges.    I am sure his parents were devastated.....for the rest of their lives.
