The Maldives – a sustainability success story

WATCH A SHORT FILM ON MALDIVES SKIPJACK TUNA

In the Maldives, pole and line fishing runs "in the blood". Twelve years ago, its skipjack tuna fishery became the first Indian Ocean tuna fishery to be certified to the MSC’s Standard for sustainable fishing.

Responding to the global demand for sustainably sourced tuna, the Maldives government, business, environmental NGOs and fishers have worked hard together to overcome setbacks and make sustainable skipjack tuna fishing a thriving part of the economy. Today, more than 50,000 tonnes of Maldivian skipjack tuna are exported annually to Europe and North America.
