MedTech need no longer be from Mars, nor Nursing from Venus

Don’t spend time reading the hype, technology needs to be in the real world

Search ‘Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare’ on LinkedIn and you quickly get overwhelmed, as you see the volume of articles written on the topic (I am awaiting the AI tool that synthesises them in real-time).  It’s been the same for every new initiative I have seen over the last 35 years (anyone remember the hype around MRP in the late 80’s?).

For me, the most important moment, when any of this intellectual discussion matters, is when a living person is using actual technology, in the real world.  For the last 10 years I have, with mixed success, had a career goal on helping to drive up patient engagement (cf. Dave Chase 2012 Forbes article ).

Nurses need to be front and centre for real-world impact

Talking to Natasha over the last couple of years I have realised, as a MedTech (and now BioTech) sector, we have missed a massive trick.  Nurses (alongside AHPs) provide 80% of professional Healthcare contact across every Health system in the world and yet the way we engage with them is ad hoc or piecemeal at best.

Dig a little deeper and you begin to realise the cost of this.

This starts with understanding that a clinical diagnosis (where most of our effort goes) is different from a nursing diagnosis (more rounded as it’s about the whole patient) and then seeing that this initial lack of understanding creates an ever-widening chasm between patient and treatment with each iteration of each narrowly-scoped clinical innovation.

So, as a MedTech and BioTech industry we need to think about nursing separately from clinical treatment. At Future Nurse we want to lead the development of this thinking and put it into practice.  Natasha and I aim to model and then build a trusting, confident, lively network of Nurse and MedTech professionals who discuss topics that matter to both sides, whilst also implementing quickly and effectively on the front-line.

Get involved in the conversation

There will be more to come on over the next few weeks but, if you want a grounded, rounded perspective on nursing and technology, talk to us.

(PS. Forgive the Gen-X title reference, Millennials and Gen-Z but the headline summarises our shared POV well).
