Mercedes Deiz (1917 - 2005): Breaking Barriers

Mercedes Deiz was born on December 13, 1917, to Czechoslovakian and Cuban parents, imbuing her with a rich cultural heritage. Raised in an environment fostering intellectual curiosity, Deiz attributed much of her drive to her parents' emphasis on education, which included frequent visits to public educational institutions such as libraries and museums. This early exposure laid the foundation for her remarkable achievements in the legal field.

In 1948, Deiz moved to Portland, Oregon, where she embarked on her legal journey by studying at the Northwestern School of Law. Despite facing numerous obstacles as a woman of color in a predominantly white, male-dominated profession, Deiz persevered, earning admission to the Oregon State Bar in 1960. Her admission paved the way for future generations of minority lawyers in the state.

In 1969, Deiz became the first black woman to hold the position of district court judge in Oregon, marking a pivotal moment in the state's legal history. Her appointment underscored both her legal expertise and unwavering commitment to the cause of justice. In 1972, Deiz achieved another historic milestone by becoming the first black woman elected as a county circuit court judge in Oregon, further solidifying her legacy as a pioneer in the legal profession.

Throughout her career on the bench, Deiz distinguished herself with her integrity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to upholding the law. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of aspiring lawyers, particularly women and minorities, as she paved the way for greater diversity and representation in the judiciary.
