Misogyny in music: Is the music industry changing for women?

CIISA CEO Jen Smith gave evidence at the Women and Equalities Select Committee yesterday calling for the music industry to fund CIISA so that women working in music can be kept safe

The Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority, CIISA, gave evidence to the Women and Equalities Select Committee yesterday, at a follow-up session one year on since the publication of its Misogyny in Music report, which gave unequivocal backing to CIISA’s creation, noting: “the establishment of a new authority, the Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority (CIISA) will help to shine a light on unacceptable behaviour in the music industry and in doing so, may reduce the risk of further harm. Crucially, it will be a single, recognisable body that anyone in the industry can turn to for support and advice.”

Jen Smith, CIISA CEO said, “I can’t underestimate the significance of revisiting this landmark report which continues to play an important role in our on-going conversations. One year on I am pleased to report there is huge support for CIISA within the music sector in the main, but this good will must be translated into sustainable funding and our immediate funding commitments need to be honoured. One-year commitments and warm words will not sustain CIISA. The need for CIISA remains evident, there is a persistent problem with behaviours and CIISA has a significant role to play in addressing them. We are building CIISA because we love the creative industries and we want our colleagues to feel safe and protected and informed whilst they make the music, TV, film and theatre that is envy of the world.”
