Modern Marketing vs. Traditional Marketing
There are two worlds of marketing. Modern and Traditional marketing. And most Internet Marketers will quickly dismiss traditional marketing as “dead”.
But is it?
Before we can answer that question, let’s define what traditional marketing is. We assume that Modern marketing encompasses marketing on the internet and using such platforms as Google Adwords, Social Media advertising and marketing, and things such as opt-in pages and JV launches.
Traditional marketing is normally seen as the “Here’s my shizzle, buy my shizzle” type of message seen on TV and Radio ads and those fun leaflets people drop through your door (direct mail).
But I ask you – if traditional marketing is dead…why are so many companies still doing it? Here’s my take on it – IT WORKS!
Traditional Examples 📰📺
Let’s take an objective look. When were you last at a networking event? Did you take anything with you? Yes I mean your business card. And I’ll bet you left with a few more than you walked in with too! Did they all get your attention? Of course not. But the ones that mattered certainly did.
Have you ever spotted something you want to buy on Amazon or Ebay and then closed the page because you were busy or otherwise distracted? My guess is that further down the line, an ad showed up on Facebook, Google or other website which showed you that item. And I’ll also bet that at some point (not always) you’ve gone back to that item and bought it because it still fulfilled a need. That my friend, is still traditional “buy my shizzle” marketing.
Modern Examples 😎
You want to get your brand in front of people’s eyes, and gain rapport at the same time. So you record a video and post it as an ad on Social Media. You then stalk that person around the web until they “opt in” and enter them into your funnel.
Just for good measure, you’ve drummed up some content by writing a few blogs. You decide to scatter the link to that blog all over your social networks hoping to get lots of likes, comments and shares so that your ideal customer can find you and do business with you.
As you can see from these methods, they are all used frequently and they can all lead to leads, brand exposure and sales.
DADDY I WANT MARIO KART! 🎮🏎️
Now of course you could argue that traditional marketing includes billboard and TV ads, and that conversion rates here are pretty low, and you’d be right! When was the last time you actually watched through all the commercials between your favourite TV shows? I can’t remember either. However these still work for certain markets. Those of you who are parents will know what it’s like when your child has watched a new toy being advertised on TV!
Direct Mail also works really well with the older market – therefore health and insurance companies target this demographic via Direct Mail much more than Social Media campaigns (though these can help).
The Future 🚀🛰️
It’s no surprise that traditional media has evolved and will continue to evolve. Some traditional media companies already have a Pay per Inquiry policy. With new technology, I can imagine the product you searched on Amazon to be shown as an ad on your TV set, with the option to “buy now” being displayed on your Smart TV and automatically billed. Your favourite health blogger will have their own branded protein shake shown to you on your Augmented Reality Glasses because they targeted you through Facebook.
