Monthly Update - June 2024

Monthly Update - June 2024

As we pass the halfway mark of 2024, our monthly update from the One Planet Network takes place amidst reflection on progress and looking to the future of action for the Sustainable Development Goals.

This weekend seen the publication of the 2024 edition of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Report, raising considerable warnings that we remain off track to meeting their promise by 2030.

Secretary-General Guterres highlighted how progress to achieving the SDGs had been hindered by persisting global pressures and called for both major investment and up-scaling of action to respond to this moment of ‘choice and consequence’.

Despite the challenges cited in the report, there were many successes which pointed to the path forward with breakthroughs in Sustainable Consumption and Production policy take-up and innovation by Member States, a significant majority of global businesses reporting on sustainability, and global capacity to generate electricity from renewable energy is expanding at an unprecedented rate of 8.1% each year for the last five years.

There’s no doubt that this progress report makes challenging reading, yet it shows unprecedented progress in key areas where sustainable solutions have been embraced and are now bearing fruit - generating prosperous alternatives and pointing the way forward.

The report calls for renewed commitment to action that delivers for the goals and emphasises the need for greater collaboration among governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals. Such collaboration is essential for scaling successful initiatives and actions to realise the promise of the SDGs.

The SDG report sets the stage for the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the UN HQ in New York from 8-18 July 2024, followed by the Summit of the Future taking place soon after the One Planet Network Forum in September. Watch this space for an update next month on the work of our network and partners at the HLPF.

Call for submission of resources: Materials Hub “10 Whole Life Cycle Recommendations for the Buildings Breakthrough” case study platform

The 10 Whole Life Cycle Recommendations for the Buildings Breakthrough are a consensus driven set of actions for decision makers to consider, in order to meet the challenge of whole life cycle impacts in the building sector. They were developed by the Materials Hub through extensive stakeholder engagement including over 100 academic, policy and industry professionals from over 42 countries.

The recommendations have the ambition to promote Whole Life Cycle (WLC) policy thinking on a global stage, and to raise awareness on the significance of addressing Whole Life Cycle emissions and promoting circularity in the built environment in implementing the Buildings Breakthorugh Priority Areas: (1) Standards and certification; (2) Demand creation; (3) Finance and investment; (4) Research and Innovation; and (5) Capability and skills.

During the 2024 GlobalABC Annual Assembly, that took place virtually on 19th and 20th of June, the Materials Hub and its two parallel working groups Circular Built Environment and Whole Life Cycle Policy Coalition launched a case study platform that aims to foster and disseminate a collection of case studies and good practices globally in support of the set of recommendation. A selection of this resources will be highlighted during COP29.

Submit your resources no later than July 31st HERE

The Materials Hub is hosted by the GlobalABC and managed in partnership with the One Planet Network and the Life Cycle Initiative

Sustainable Food Systems:

HLPF side event: “Measuring and expanding progress on healthy diets from sustainable food systems: implications for achieving SDG2”

Switzerland and Costa Rica will co-organize a side event on 9th July (13:15-14:30pm) at the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, in New York City (Conference Room E, UN Headquarters, New York). This side event will bring to the attention of policymakers the central role of high-quality diets and nutrition in achieving the SDGs. We are approaching the 2025 review of achievements on important commitments prioritizing nutrition from the World Health Assembly (WHA) global nutrition targets and the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025). In this context, renewed ambitious goals need to be set to coordinate action on sustainable food systems and further strengthen collaboration between the health and agriculture sectors so that all people at all times and at all stages of life have access to affordable, diversified, safe and healthy diets.
