Morning Routines

Morning Routines

I've always been fascinated with the morning routines of successful people. Truthfully, I wasn't always a morning person but that changed when I accepted a Systems Administrator role at GLENTEL Inc. back in 2004. My shift started at 6AM PST because we supported retail locations across Canada. I didn't have a choice but to evolve into a "morning person" which also happened to spur my love affair with coffee.

Jeff Bezos Puttering Routine

I stumbled upon this clip of Jeff Bezos talking about his morning routine, he likes to putter as he described in this clip and doesn't have any meetings before 10AM.

Elon Musk Rise and Donut

In a recent article with Business Insider they covered Elon's morning routine and how he starts every day with a doughnut, breakfast of champions?

Musk wakes up around 9 a.m. and has said he starts every morning with a doughnut. Musk told The Wall Street Journal in 2023 that he usually goes to bed around 3 a.m. and sleeps for six hours. So, he's typically waking up around 9 a.m. each day.

Martin's Morning Method

So what does my morning routine look like? I'll share below and honestly, this is the same routine I've been following for 10+ years with some exceptions:

  • Up at 4:30-5:00AM daily, with the odd exception of sleeping in until 6:00AM on the weekend
  • 32oz of coffee mandatory, no exceptions, ever! 2 x 16oz cups, cream, no sugar
  • No breakfast, I'm one of those weird people that doesn't eat breakfast 99% of the time. That being said, I do have cream in my coffee to technically coffee cream is my breakfast
  • Respond to emails, teams messages, consume content on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, and savour every drop of that delicious Beachcomber Coffee
  • Gym or some form of exercise before any meetings (unless it's a rest day) - gone are the days of a workout at the end of the day although I do miss the Dave Brett Griffins Boxing and Fitness evening workouts!
  • Like Bezos, my ideal time for my first meetings is 10AM, I need a good wind up, time to think, the opportunity to prepare, I'm not a fan of meetings at 8AM or 9AM (of course I make exceptions for my Lyra Technology Group Central Time and all my East coast peeps)

One interesting anecdote is that I've noticed everyone at my local gym that works out early in the morning is either a business owner or entrepreneur (lots of realtors). I'd love to hear from some of you in the comments on your unique morning routines or other morning hacks you've come across.

I wake up at 4:30 to 5am and have no meetings before 10am. In those quite 5 hours, it’s like you can live an entire day before the normal person even starts
