Moving from management to leadership

Welcome to our first Life Science Leaders newsletter of 2024! In this edition, we focus on how you can make the leap from management to leadership. We explore the differences between the two roles and provide insights into ways you can think and act like a leader.

Management vs. leadership

Differences between a manager and a leader

The terms are often used interchangeably, so what’s the real difference between a manager and a leader? Simply put, managers coordinate tasks and projects, while leaders inspire and guide teams towards a shared vision. To be successful, a life science organisation needs a balance of both, managers to prioritise what needs to be done and leaders to cultivate a vision that drives scientific progress, inspires a culture of collaboration, and the ability to implement forward-thinking strategies to navigate the complexities of the life sciences landscape.

Showing your leadership capabilities

How can you show you're a leader?

As well as demonstrating you have the skills to be a leader, such as the ability to make decisions, communicate effectively and solve problems, there are also other ways you can strengthen your credibility including:

1. Being a thought leader

Thought leadership is the expression of ideas that demonstrate you have expertise in a subject matter. Establishing yourself as a thought leader is a fantastic way of building your reputation and being at the forefront of your industry. First of all, you have to decide what you want to be known for. Where is your expertise? To build your personal brand, you need to consistently post content on social media that helps you to build trust with the audience, shows you are knowledgeable and that you have valuable insights to share.

2. Joining a professional association

Get involved with a professional association in the life sciences industry by attending meetings, networking with members, and perhaps serving on the board. You will learn a lot from an association, and it can be great to take this information back to your team. Start by attending events and then find out how you can get more involved. You can also really strengthen your leadership skills by volunteering to lead a committee or organise an event.

3. Going beyond your job title

Going above and beyond shows your strong work ethic. If you want to show you are leadership material, think of ways you can break the boundaries of your job description. A good way of showing your commitment is putting yourself forward to take on more responsibilities or taking on a new challenge.
