The Novolex growth story begins with Hilex® Poly, our business that manufactures plastic retail bags and operates plastic bag and film recycling operations. As sales grew organically, Novolex began acquiring companies that built on our strengths in packaging and product innovation — adding complementary products to our portfolio and contributing to our sustainability story. Several of those business units, including Hilex, are celebrating anniversaries in 2023.

Dr. Sonya Benson sits at the cutting edge of sustainable packaging innovation—and she wouldn’t want it any other way. Sonya holds a PhD in macromolecular science and engineering and her passion for polymers and scientific solutions is at the forefront of her work as a technology and lab manager for Shields™, Hilex® and Heritage®, all part of the Novolex family of companies.

Adrienne Smith doesn’t take shortcuts. She isn’t afraid to jump into hard work, use her voice, and prove her point, even if her peers tend to be mostly male. Just short of 100 miles from the nation’s capital, in Richmond, VA, Adrienne exercises her eye for organization and execution as plant manager. She oversees 131 employees and is joined by three women supervisors, a number she is actively trying to boost as she works with HR to recruit and empower women on the front line, in leadership roles, and even those just starting out in the manufacturing industry.
