Navigating the Uncanny Valley of Deep Fakes

Navigating the Uncanny Valley of Deep Fakes

I am sure you have seen a number of “AI-generated images” - also here on LinkedIn.

Personally, I am a bit tired of those images in the LinkedIn stream. But it is worthwhile to have a look at the phenomena as it evolves at an incredible speed.

Let me share a few images with you first.

The left one was created (via Leonardo) around August / September last year (2023) (that is only 3 to 4 months ago). And the right one was created today (February 2024). I have used the same prompt.

By the way, I added the prompts too. You might wonder why I prompted “a stupid boy”. This was to test at the time the AI biases and how AI perceives a “stupid boy” which is intentionally something vague and very questionable. The fact how much the quality of the image has evolved remains untouched.

This illustrates how far technology has come in only a few months. Now let’s try to extrapolate the development by the end of 2024. We already have “real-time” generation which means that you enter the prompt and your image is created and updated.

With that in mind, let’s dive into the topic of the post.

Let’s have a look into the increasingly complex landscape of generative AI images, exploring the intricacies of Deep Fakes, the concept of the Uncanny Valley, and the broader implications for our society.

The Rise of Deep Fakes:

Note: The above images are not “deep fake”. I do not want to create deep fakes and share to such a large audience due to the potential legal implications.

With advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, the creation of hyper-realistic images and videos has become more accessible than ever before as we can see above. Deep Fakes, a term coined to describe digitally manipulated media that convincingly depict events that never happened or individuals saying and doing things they never did, have surged in prominence. What was once confined to the realm of Hollywood special effects has now become a tool readily available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection.

And as we can see from above, the development is so fast, that this is more a question of today than tomorrow to address!

The Uncanny Valley:

Central to the discussion of Deep Fakes is the concept of the Uncanny Valley. Coined by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori, the Uncanny Valley describes the unsettling feeling that arises when a humanoid object closely resembles a real human but falls short in some subtle yet crucial way. As Deep Fakes bridge the gap between reality and fabrication, they often evoke this discomfort, blurring the lines between truth and fiction.

Now the question arises if you still have discomfort when you look at some of the images. I am sharing another one here which might be real or not - who knows (except for me).

What do you think?

Real or not?

Navigating Ambiguity:

In a world saturated with digital content, the proliferation of Deep Fakes poses significant challenges. The ability to manipulate visuals with such precision raises questions about the authenticity of information and erodes trust in what we see. As Deep Fakes become increasingly sophisticated, distinguishing between genuine and fabricated content becomes a daunting task.

It is not only daunting, it is rightout impossible. Or it will be very soon. Especially, when you do not have the time to analyse an image and if you rely on first impressions.

Whilst it is amazing to create such images (and movies) for all kinds of purposes, this will also be one of our biggest challenges very soon. Just think of elections coming up. I am not going into politics, but you get the idea.

Risks and Opportunities:

The implications of Deep Fakes extend far beyond the realm of entertainment. From misinformation campaigns to identity theft and political manipulation, the potential for harm is vast. However, amidst the risks lie opportunities for innovation and creativity. Hyper-realistic images have the potential to revolutionize industries such as filmmaking, advertising, and virtual reality, offering new avenues for expression and storytelling.

So, how do we deal with the situation? What is your view?

Building Resilience:

As we navigate this uncertain landscape, it is crucial to develop resilience against the threat of Deep Fakes. This entails not only investing in technological solutions to detect and combat fraudulent content but also fostering critical thinking skills among the populace. By educating ourselves about the methods and implications of digital manipulation, we can better discern fact from fiction and safeguard against the erosion of trust.

It is a race of technologies. And Leonardo and co are well ahead of counter-measures. Surely, it is also on their agenda, but there are now so many image generation tools available that restricting them is not a real option.

One path to look at is the Blockchain. This is where various emerging technologies converge and add value to each other - and therefore to us humans.

Looking Ahead:

The pace of technological advancement shows no signs of slowing down, raising the question of how quickly we will adapt to the prevalence of Deep Fakes. Will we reach a point where we can no longer trust anything we see? Are we already there?

Or will we harness the power of generative AI to usher in a new era of creativity and innovation?

Hopefully, this short newsletter will shed light on the urgency of the topic. I urge you to discuss this with your teams, your colleagues but also with your family. Deep Fakes and Cyberbullying go hand-in-hand and are becoming a lot easier for attackers.

I am generally positive and optimistic about a lot of the opportunities stemming from emerging technologies. But this topic is one where I see real danger - mainly due to the speed the quality evolves combined with the fact that we are “visual beings” and we are used to trusting our eyes.

So, let’s work together on addressing the challenges.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Michael
