A new perspective on the future

One of the great things I see as students go through our program is the experiences they are offered. Not everyone takes advantage of them, thinking that perhaps they have too much homework or that they aren't good enough. But those who do take a chance enjoy life-changing events that affect the way they view the world and their future as engineers.

ME senior Timothy Phero came into our offices last spring as he worked to fund such an opportunity. He returned to my office recently excited by his experience.

"When I applied for the GREEN program, I was nervous and reluctant about many things. However, a leap of faith and 2,000 miles later I found myself in the beautiful country of Iceland. This trip, to me, was much more than just learning about sustainability and sight-seeing, it was a liberation from a routine of work and academics that had become the entirety of my life. The GREEN program fostered personal growth, tossed me beyond my comfort zone by challenging how I viewed the world and unveiled new possibilities for me to develop as a global citizen.

"Humbled and grateful for this opportunity, I will tell you that the time I spent on this trip has been the most amazing experience of my life. The program was only 10 days so everything I’ve said may sound extremely bold or over-exaggerated, but a quote from Jonah Lehrer says it best: 'Distance and difference are the secret tonic of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything.'

"I have only just recently returned from this trip and I can’t wait to connect what I’ve learned abroad and apply it to the place I call home."

Congratulations to Tim and all the students who take the opportunity to learn and grow beyond the classroom!
