New Sick Leave Benefits for Minnesota Workers

New Sick Leave Benefits for Minnesota Workers

Happy 2024, employees of Minnesota! Prepare for a big shift that will affect workers' rights and welfare: the Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) law will go into force on January 1st, 2024. Most Minnesota employees now have access to paid leave for a variety of personal and family reasons thanks to this historic law.

What you should know is as follows:

Accruing Time: Up to 48 hours of paid ESST can be earned annually, or one hour for every 30 hours worked. With the exception of independent contractors, this is applicable to the majority of Minnesotan employees who work at least 80 hours a year.

Using your ESST: There are several ways in which you may put your accumulated time to use, such as:

Your own ailment or trauma: Take care of yourself without worrying about missing work, whether you have a normal cold or are recuperating from surgery.

Looking after a dear one: Do you have to take a sick family member to the doctor or bring a youngster to an appointment? ESST is ready to help.

Domestic abuse or harassment victims: Paid leave now allows you to attend court hearings or seek assistance in cases like these.

Looking for preventative medical care: Make time for medical visits and mental health services to take charge of your health.

Flexible Use: You are legally permitted to use your ESST for as long as you need it, even if it's only to attend a doctor's appointment for a few hours.

What Takes Place If You've Taken Leave Already?

You can probably expect your company to avoid making major modifications if they currently have a paid time off (PTO) policy that either meets or exceeds the minimal ESST criteria. They must nevertheless, however, make sure that workers are aware of their ESST rights and the ways in which they may utilise their accumulated time.
