New study reveals major improvement in students’ understanding of algorithmic bias

In the Generation AI (GenAI) STN-hanke we create learning tools for schools and study their effectiveness. Our most recent research examined how children explain the causes of algorithmic bias and how these explanations improved after using the AI learning tools we developed.

The results showed statistically significant progress in children's data-driven explanations on a written reasoning test administered before and after the intervention, as well as in their responses to worksheets completed during a lesson on algorithmic biases. Notably, 40.7% of children demonstrated a genuine understanding of bias arising from the AI training process, a significant increase from 6.7% in the pre-test. Students were also more likely to critically evaluate AI applications after the workshops.

The research was led by the University of Eastern Finland and funded by the Strateginen tutkimus | Strategic Research council of Finland.
