New Uses for Legacy Tech, Orgs Destabilizing Due to Israel-Hamas War, and Your Personal Growth Matters: Your Weekend Reading List

I like to switch things up. On Fridays, my goal is to carefully cultivate a weekend reading list of important news and publications to help you be a better leader, practitioner, and person. Let’s take a look!

Emerging Tech

This is the best AI technology you’re probably not using (Washington Post)

Though glide typing has been around for years, this writer somehow magically discovered the power of this tool. There’s interesting cybersecurity analysis included with a hint of picking at China’s comparative tech offerings.

Google takes aim at Duolingo with new English tutoring tool (TechCrunch)

Google search users in India are getting some help with learning English. I look forward to this pilot test being successful so I can master Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic.

What happened to edge computing? (InfoWorld)

Edge computing was once all the rage but now adoption is slowing. Interoperability and security opportunities remain.

Politics and Defense

Exclusive: ‘Mutiny Brewing’ Inside State Department Over Israel-Palestine Policy (HuffPost)

The Israel-Hamas war is overwhelming for everyone (hence me taking a pivot on what I send to you all). Apparently, camps within the State Department are taking their stands, and things on the internal side of Washington may get ugly.

Illinois comptroller’s office employee fired over antisemitic comments in online exchange (Chicago Tribune)

Someone’s personal Instagram exchange had professional repercussions.

‘Major expansion’: China now has more than 500 nukes, Pentagon says (Politico)

This ain’t a scene, it’s a goddamn arms race! Should nuclear arsenal continue to be a measurement of power and prowess for nation-states?

Personal Development and Leadership

3 Ways to Successfully Manage Large-Scale R&D Projects  (Harvard Business Review)

Commitment, communication, and courage are the keys to successful R&D project management!

How to Create a Personal Growth and Professional Development Plan (Southern New Hampshire University)

SMART goals can help you in your personal and professional development journey.

You’re Not Powerless in the Face of Imposter Syndrome (Harvard Business Review)

I spent many years downplaying myself due to imposter syndrome, and I still struggle with owning my expertise around others. Can you relate? Let’s take our power back!

What this means for you: The Israel-Hamas war is creating tension within organizations and the risk of internal instability is on the rise. Emerging technologies sometimes aren’t very emergent, but rather, legacy tech that people are finding new uses for and relevance to. There are always opportunities to grow. We do our jobs better when we do better by ourselves, and this isn’t about Gen-Z toxic mindfulness and protecting peace. Growth is an active, life-long process.

What to do about it: Read. Learn. Grow. Reach out!
