Exploring Institutional Engagement at all levels
As we work with higher education institutions in different countries, the following question keeps arising: How should the need and the benefits of experiential microcredentials (XPMCs) be communicated across different levels of each organisation?
We have introduced workshops to create conversations on what it takes to be a leader in building education for the future. For these sessions, we invite colleagues from our partner institutions to become the co-creators of a different kind of higher education that the learners deserve.
Other questions arising in our engagement with academic partners are: Should the priority be given to individual or collective assessment? How can we most effectively measure and demonstrate job readiness? Perhaps most pressing, when is the optimal stage in an undergraduate study to begin the #XPMC?
These interactions are inevitably shaping what we do. In some sense, it may be easier to say what we wouldn’t do: We are not going to be a credentials supermarket, and we are not just training entry-level talent. The XPMC prepares learners for a higher-level entry point in their careers because of its experiential component, designed to create workplace exposure and leadership capabilities.
Employers do need to engage with the external world to obtain new ideas, and this is precisely what we offer. It means that we may have to be selective about the employers that we talk to – perhaps we should therefore focus on companies facing particular digital disruption and thus in need of a new thinking and talent.
This highlights our principal point: Employability.life is an innovation partner to both our academic and employer partners. Too many organisations follow a closed innovation model, allowing only limited access to new concepts and sources of ideas from outside. Overcoming this obstacle to success ought to be an attractive opportunity for all senior managers in companies that face the possibility of stagnation.
We also have to recognise the fact that the #HigherEducation sector - in its present condition – is failing to provide relevant ideas because of the divergence between curricular objectives and employer requirements. This is precisely the focus of Employability.life , to supply teams of talented learners to companies to solve actual problems. This is not a matter of being some form of recruitment agency, but becoming the innovation partner. We can offer the capacity for concept generation, customer research, and idea selection, all in an end-to-end solution managed by us. We are thus a platform for open innovation. This innovation ecosystem is the value proposition around which Employability.life is based.
