The Night-Time Environment and Its Influence on Violence
The night-time environment (NTE) is a unique setting characterised by the consumption of alcohol and other substances that can lead to violent incidents. NTEs, with a high density of licensed premises, act as destinations, drawing patrons for various reasons, from the allure of entertainment venues to the potential for social and even romantic encounters. This makes the NTE a hub for socialising, often referred to as the "business of pleasure."
In their 2022 study, Moore and others stimulate debate around the causal mechanisms responsible for violence in NTEs.
Factors influencing violence in NTEs
The combination of alcohol consumption and crowded spaces can lead to increased stress and aggression. Alcohol can impair judgment, while crowded spaces can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed or trapped.
In busy NTEs, patrons often have to queue, whether it's for a drink, fast food, or a taxi. Queueing can be a source of stress, especially when there's a perceived unfairness in the order of service or when someone "jumps the queue." The longer the wait, the higher the stress, which can escalate tensions and potentially lead to confrontations.
Factors like the weather, significant sporting events, and the sheer number of people present can also influence the likelihood of violent incidents. For instance, international rugby matches, temperature changes, national holidays, and the day of the week can all play a role in predicting assault-related injuries.
The multiplicative effect of "Other People"
One of the key findings from the research was the non-linear relationship between the number of people in the NTE and the number of assault-related visits to emergency departments. As the number of patrons in the NTE increases, the likelihood of violent incidents also rises, but not in a straightforward manner. This suggests that the sheer volume of people, combined with other environmental factors, can amplify the risk of violence.
Importance of understanding factors influencing violence in NTEs
Understanding the dynamics of the NTE is crucial for both societal well-being and economic reasons. Reducing violence leads to safer communities. By understanding the triggers and factors that contribute to violent incidents, policymakers and stakeholders can implement strategies to mitigate these risks, thus improving societal well-being.
The NTE is a significant contributor to the economy, with many businesses relying on the patronage of night-time revellers. However, frequent violent incidents can deter patrons, leading to economic losses. Moreover, violent incidents place a strain on healthcare resources, leading to additional economic costs.
The night-time environment is a complex interplay of various factors that can influence the likelihood of violent incidents. By understanding these factors, we can create safer and more enjoyable NTEs for everyone.
Data used in the research
The research utilised data from the University Hospital of Wales, which recorded assault-related emergency department visits. Additionally, footfall data available from the Consumer Data Research Centre, representing the number of unique individuals in the city centre during night-time hours, was derived from wireless monitoring tools.
