Nokia teases something big coming next week

Nokia, by way of HMD Global, has taken to Twitter to tease a new upcoming smartphone. The teaser shows nothing more than the silhouette of the device, along with the caption "Get ready to unveil the most awaited smartphone." You can view the tweet here.

That's quite a claim from the company, especially seeing as how HMD has been doing a good job releasing a steady stream of high-quality smartphones. The company's most recent trio, the Nokia 2.1, 3.1, and 5.1, show just how much the company can push the low-end with premium offerings. Then there's the Nokia 6.1 and 7 Plus, which bring flagship build to mid-range smartphones.

In terms of flagship devices, the Nokia 8 and 8 Sirocco were decent offerings, but did little to offer much excitement against other smartphones in the same category. Perhaps we really are getting the flagship we've been waiting for in the form of the rumored Nokia 9 or 10.

It's been long rumored that HMD has had one or two flagships in tow with very powerful cameras. While the rumors have varied here and there, the most popular has been the development of a Nokia 10 featuring a 5-camera setup. It's anyone's guess how the cameras will be divvied up, although it's likely to see three on the back and two on the front akin to the recent LG V40 rumors. If this is true, LG's would-be (albeit, rumored) hold on the first smartphone with 5 cameras would be snatched up.

A Nokia 9 has also been rumored to hold a powerful camera setup, with two on the back and two on the front. It's been suggested that at least one of the rear cameras would feature a 22MP resolution with a secondary wide-angle or telephoto lens (monochrome is also a possibility). Some leaks have pointed to a 52MP camera on an upcoming Nokia along with the latest Snapdragon 845 and at least 6GB or RAM, and while that may well be the Nokia 10 (or the 9, it's very confusing at this point), it's unclear how credible the claim is.

The rumors may be pointing in various directions, but they all seemed to agree that this new camera-centric smartphone would be announced during the second half of this year, so the timing feels right. It's been long-awaited for Nokia to grace us with another smartphone on the level of the 808 Pureview or Lumia 1020, and with the recent release of Huawei's P20 Pro, it's time for Nokia to show us that it's not going to let anyone take its megapixel crown.

Keep an eye out, as the launch is set to take place Tuesday, August 21st.
