The latest Deloitte North America Technology Fast 500 is out. The Fast 500 is our annual ranking of the fastest-growing North American companies in the technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences, fintech, and energy tech sectors. It’s now in its 27th year.

Big congratulations to #Axonics, which claimed the number-one spot for 2021. This Irvine, Calif.-based #HealthTech company saw its revenue grow 87,037% from 2017 to 2020. #GetUpside, a retail technology company based in Washington, DC, took second place with 60,259% growth during the same timeframe. Text-messaging service provider #Attentive, based in Hoboken, NJ, rounded out the top three with revenue growth of 49,155%.

Here in San Francisco, 57 companies made the list—an increase from 41 last year. All told, 104 companies from the Bay Area made their way onto this year’s Fast 500. The sheer diversity of this group underscores the region’s reputation as an innovation engine for the ever-growing technology sector.

This year’s results reflect a business environment that’s unusual even for the fast-changing technology sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic touched off a health crisis and an extended period of economic uncertainty. Thrown into uncharted waters, the companies on our Fast 500 list powered through—and their achievements are a matter of record.

What does the future hold for these and other companies in technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT)? Here’s a roundup of predictions from the data-crunching prognosticators at Deloitte Global:

The games console. The console market is expected to generate US$81 billion in 2022, up 10% from 2021.

RISC-V. This open-source instruction set architecture, or ISA, for chip design is at the heart of a market that is estimated to double each year from 2021 to 2023.

Fixed wireless access. Fixed wireless access (FWA)—which uses radio waves to deliver internet service between two stationary locations such as a mobile tower and a customer’s home or office—is poised to reach roughly 88 million connections in 2022, up from about 60 million in 2020.

Wearable technology in health care. Around 320 million consumer health and wellness wearable devices—think smartwatches and smart patches—are expected to ship worldwide in 2022. By 2024, that figure is estimated to reach nearly 440 million units.

Floatovoltaics. Also known as floating photovoltaics (FPVs), solar panels that float on water are estimated to reach an aggregate installed capacity of 5.2 gigawatts peak globally by the end of 2022, representing US$4–5 billion in spending.

There’s more in the just-published TMT Predictions 2022. You may explore them all to see how worldwide trends in TMT may affect businesses and consumers worldwide. It’s striking to see how many of these trends are being driven by the global pandemic’s economic and societal shifts.
