Novatek's Arctic LNG 2 Nears First Cargo Loading with Unanswered Questions
In a significant move towards full operations, Novatek's Arctic LNG 2 project is progressing steadily, with the deployment of Chinese gas turbines marking a crucial development. The turbines have been successfully received and installed onshore, serving as a cornerstone for power generation within the project infrastructure for the 1st train.
This strategic move has enabled Novatek to start reallocating 02 Baker Hughes LM9000s, initially designated for power generation, to the second compression string dedicated to refrigeration. The successful integration of these components positions the project favorably to ramp up production in the next few days.
Upon the completion of installation and testing procedures, T1 is poised to accelerate its production capabilities to 100% well ahead of the anticipated schedule.
Anticipation is building around the imminent loading of the inaugural cargo, as the storage tanks, boasting a combined capacity of 229,000 cubic meters (2 x 114,500 m3), have already surpassed the halfway mark, currently holding over 50% of their total capacity. Notably, T1 is presently operating at approximately 40% of its nameplate capacity with a single compression string online, setting the stage for a smooth transition to full-scale production once the second string becomes operational.
However, a significant source of logistical uncertainties looms large. The imposition of US sanctions has led to foreign partners freezing their participation in the project 2 days after T1 achieved its first LNG drop. Novatek's forthcoming resolutions on these challenges will be closely monitored, as they carry implications for the project's early market interactions and its role in the global LNG landscape.

10moThe US sanctions are limited to certain parties and also has some conditions that could be circumvented to get the cargo going. There are parties that would be definitely interested to develop this further 😉
