NY Times Blasts WH Privacy Bill
New York Times Editorial Board critique of the White House draft privacy law:
"No bill at all would have been better than this one, which would effectively codify bad behavior."
Key criticisms:
"Under the bill, companies would be allowed to create their own codes of conduct governing how they collect, use and share personal information. The Federal Trade Commission would have to approve those codes, but the legislation would make it hard for the regulator to reject weak ones. Companies would be required to notify individuals about the information they are collecting. But they would not have to get permission first.
"Further, businesses could refuse to let individuals see data about themselves if they determine that the individual requests are “frivolous or vexatious.” Vexatious means causing annoyance, frustration or worry. This is a fairly low bar for the legal departments of thin-skinned, easily vexed corporations to meet."
