In Observance of Memorial Day...
Memorial Day is known as the "unofficial start of summer". It's a time where most of us are looking forward to a long weekend, hoping for nice weather and getting ready for a local parade and a cookout with friends and family. Being a veteran myself, Memorial Day is also time to reflect on my time in the US Navy and being thankful for all those who served before, with and after me.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War. It became an official federal holiday in 1971. The purpose is to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S military.
Americans are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m on Memorial Day. This tradition was established in 2000 by then-President Bill Clinton, so people could "remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all."
For those of you that are volunteering your time helping with a town parade, or the cleanup and placement of American Flags at military grave sites, you have my gratitude. For all of my fellow veterans, thank you for your service. And for all the people out there (my staff included!) that are working on this and every holiday to ensure the safety and well-being of all of us, thank you. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday.
