Outdoor Furniture: Experience the Benefits of Nature

As the weather heats up, now is the time to consider new outdoor furniture for your park, school, business or other facility. Studies have shown that being outside leads to lower stress and anxiety levels, improved memory, lower inflammation, improved focus and more. Taking a break to step outside has benefits for everyone, so be sure your outdoor space is up to par.

During the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were pushed outdoors to help limit the spread of disease in close, confined areas. Outdoor dining became commonplace, parks and playgrounds that were often overlooked for electronics were full again, hiking trails replaced treadmills and outdoor activities like golf and biking saw a great resurgence. The appreciation for nature not only returned, it has remained.

Types of Outdoor Furniture

More people outside means a greater need for outdoor furniture. What pieces do you need in your outdoor space? Here are a few to consider.

  •      Benches – From hiking trails to school courtyards, benches are a great choice for weary walkers and students. Benches are an inexpensive and long-lasting seating option for multiple people.
  •      Picnic Tables – Picnic tables allow multiple students or guests to gather for conversation, dining and more. Some schools even offer outdoor lunch sessions every day during the warmer months.
  •    Trash Cans – More people in your outdoor area also means more trash. Keep your green space looking its best by providing trash receptacles throughout your outdoor areas.
  •    Planters – Enhance your outdoor space with additional flowers and greenery. Well-placed planters add brightness and interest without breaking the budget.
  •    Display Boards – Be sure guests to your outdoor area are familiar with rules, current events, trail maps and more. Display boards are a quick and easy way to communicate your messages.
  •    Playground Equipment – Outdoor play opens up a world of physical and mental advantages for kids of any age. Consider traditional playground equipment like swings and slides, as well as modern climbers and rock walls.

Outdoor Furniture Materials

When planning your outdoor areas, you will need to consider the elements. Your outdoor furniture needs to be made from materials that can stand up to water and sun exposure, as well as extreme heat and cold in certain regions. Some materials to look for include:

  •        Recycled Plastic – While treated wood once ruled playgrounds and parks, recycled plastic is the newest material many customers desire for their outdoor furniture. In addition to being an Earth-conscious choice, recycled plastic is excellent at resisting the elements. It is waterproof, rustproof, resists fading and requires little upkeep. Wipe away soil and graffiti with ease. Many of today's benches, picnic tables, trash cans and playground structures are made from recycled plastic.
  •       Thermoplastic Coatings – Some folks prefer sturdy steel structures and furniture for their outdoor spaces. While untreated steel will develop rust and wear in wet conditions, steel furniture topped with a thermoplastic coating is extremely durable. Thermoplastic coatings are often a mix of materials that could include polyethylene, PVC, nylon, polypropylene and thermoplastic polyester. The coating is sprayed on the steel structure then heated to form a durable, attractive finish. Thermoplastic coatings come in many fun colors to brighten any outdoor space.
  •       Aluminum – Since aluminum doesn't contain steel or iron, it resists rust. It is common to see aluminum bleachers and park benches that still look great after decades of use. Aluminum is an economical choice for outdoor furniture.
  •      Blow-Molded Plastic Resin – Blow-molded plastic resin furniture is weather-resistant but often not sturdy enough to be left outdoors permanently. These types of benches, folding chairs and folding tables are great for outdoor events like carnivals, weddings and sporting events, but should be cleaned, dried and stored indoors when the event is over.

Now, go enjoy the great outdoors!
