Peer Mentoring

Peer Mentoring

Availability as an Advocate and Postured to Longitudinally Mentor One Another

Colonel Dan Blackmon, an Army Brigade Commander, discusses the importance of peer mentors on the latest episode of Candid Leadership. Through the intersections of our careers we discuss why it’s important to have someone at your work who helps you engage with your employees. Colonel Blackmon talks about advocacy in positions of leadership. He provides examples of how to champion others for leadership positions and how giving feedback from a place of trust allows the recipient to make changes in their communication methods and in leading.

Key points to highlight during this episode are:

  • The importance of having someone at your work helps you engage
  • Framing complex problems and getting it right
  • Missing opportunities for leaders and recognizing that gap and how to make change happen
  • Championing leadership positions
  • You don’t have to agree with everyone. Have conversations that matter. Have conversations from someone that’s different from you.
  • If we say people first we have to mean it
  • Small tweaks have a large impact

At the end of this episode on peer mentorship Colonel Dan Blackmon speaks to the reasons why receiving different perspectives is important. He appreciates those who provide feedback from a place of trust. He concludes the episode with great advice that he gives to the newest members of the Army joining the ranks when he tells them to seek out opportunities to grow and build a network. The honorable profession of arms that both Dan and I have served together in for over two decades shines through in this episode. I hope you enjoy our discussion on peer mentoring and reflect on how you can best find your peer mentor.

I found this to be a great podcast and really identified with how Colonel Blackmon described his advocacy and role as a bridge in very practical ways. I also got involved in equality efforts through parents' challenges around missions that require 24x7 staffing so really appreciate his role in that area!
