People Don't Simply Quit Jobs, They Quit Their Bosses
Careers are like Battlefields. Where do you think the term "War Room" a place where the think-tank work originated from? I've personally seen enough smart & promising candidates quit their missions short (read: jobs) at prestigious companies for various reasons & with excuses like career advancement, work/life balance, and the staples, etc.
During my 11 years stint in banking ONE big reason that makes people call it quits really sticks out. Some of these candidates are my close acquaintances & have shared with me the reason than pushed them to quit their job is actually their bosses.
I don't blame candidates jumping at career opportunities without doing enough research on whom their prospective boss is going to be. After all the vacancy is legit, the company is prestigious & posted solid YOY annuals and the pay is kinda good. What's left not to fancy about the job? But overlooking the know your boss (KYB) part very well means the difference between enjoying or hating one's mission (read: purgatory) for years to come. In this era of new media, one can use LinkedIn or Facebook to research (read: stalk) about one's prospective boss. Or if one prefers a more sincere feedback/1st hand review, one may reach out to the prospective boss' staff for more info.
I would like to share some KYB profiling tips (read: Pro Tips) that I think would be beneficial for the green-hearts on a job hunt as well for the seasoned employees who are planning for a change in career path. This article is in no way written to disparage anyone, but as the adage goes, "All human are flawed", one should at the very least make an effort the check the suitability (read: Feng Shui) of one's perspective working environment before one signs the offer letter (read: Terms of Surrender).
- The Passive-Aggressive Boss.
2. The Play-Favorite Boss
3. The Abusive Boss (and co-workers)
4. The Rediculous Boss
5. The Small-Small Thing Also Want to Punish Boss (read: Gila Kuasa)
Basically these are the types of bosses one should avoid at 100mph. These videos may be hilarious, but trust me it is not hilarious when it happens to oneself. As the Malaysian adage goes, "Menyesal dahulu, pendapatan. Menyesal kemudian tiada gunanya". So now you already know the type of bosses to avoid, I, therefore, wish you the best for your next career move!
