Pet Dander And Your Home

Pet Dander And Your Home

We love our pets and live more closely with them than any other animals. Genetic evidence shows that our friend the dog was domesticated by at least 15,000 years ago and possibly much earlier than that. Dogs have been our boon companions ever since our ancestors were wandering around the world during the last Ice Age. The domestication of cats dates back to at least 7500 BC and speculation is that those early cats were used to keep rodents out of our food supplies. However, our close relationship with cats and dogs has not been without a cost, particularly for those of us with allergies.

Pet dander in your home can make you miserable. Many individuals with pet allergies suffer not only from sneezing, coughing, and a runny nose but also from watery eyes and even a low-grade fever if their allergies are bad enough. So how do you deal with pet dander? Mobley Heating and Air has some helpful tips to remove pet dander from your home so that you and your animals can co-exist in harmony. One of the most effective ways of removing pet dander is to use a quality vacuum cleaner several times a week. All furniture, drapes, and upholstery should be vacuumed regularly to remove pet dander as well as other contaminants. The machine should be placed on the lowest possible setting in order to remove as much dander as possible. A lint roller or adhesive tape can be used on furniture that cannot be vacuumed or steam cleaned.

When removing pet dander from the home, it is important to remember to clean all counter tops, cabinets, baseboards and other exposed surfaces with a damp cloth and a basic cleaning solution. Draperies and linens should also be washed in a washing machine on a regular basis. Tile and hardwood floors need to be mopped as often as possible. Professional cleaning of your carpets should also be done periodically in order to remove dander build-up that the vacuum can’t reach. If you observe dust or dirt collecting on the vents in your home it may well be time to have a professional come in and clean your vents and ductwork, you will also want to change your home’s air filter on a regular basis.

Finally, you should also bathe your pet regularly. There are special pet shampoos and sprays that can work to remove excess dander. While it is not possible to eliminate pet dander from your home completely following these tips will help you and your family breathe easier and make sure your life with your pet is a happy one.
