Playing it safe is very risky for your career!
I remember a client once telling me that those who seek out 'new frontiers' usually wind up face-down in the mud with arrows sticking out of their backs.
Not long afterwards he was reaching out to see if we could help him get back in the game after being made redundant.
When people get laid off, they love to refer to it as 'to be made redundant'.
It is a casual euphemism to soften the idea of having to go. Being made 'redundant' is much better than being fired - it means that you probably didn't do anything wrong - it saves face.
To be 'fired' often means that least there was a story, a breach of rules or even a struggle... Something epic, maybe even exciting!
But being 'made redundant' is uninspiring. You were useful for a while, then you get discarded. Like an old tool.
You may decide to take the 'safe' path. You go through the motions and it eventually leads you to the exit in the back...
What 'redundant' really means is that that you simply aren't special enough to keep around.
Don't let this happen to you! Right now is a great time to do something about it...
