Powering Tomorrow: Day Two Ignites Future of Clean Energy and Space Exploration

Welcome back to our recap of the 2nd Annual Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit in Washington, D.C.! Day two of this landmark event continued to push the boundaries of nuclear energy discourse, featuring riveting discussions and visionary insights. From space exploration to global energy security, today's sessions brought together congressional and government leaders, international allies, and industry trailblazers to tackle the most pressing challenges and exciting opportunities in nuclear energy. 

The day began with a powerful keynote address from Congressman Mike Waltz (R-FL), Chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness. Drawing from his extensive military background and policy experience, Rep. Waltz emphasized the critical role of nuclear energy for military readiness and energy resilience.

Our first panel, titled “Financing for Nuclear Energy,” featured representatives from EXIM Bank, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), and the DOE's Loan Programs Office (LPO). These government leaders discussed various financing options and support mechanisms for nuclear energy projects, both domestically and in emerging markets worldwide, and highlighted the current administration's priorities and the recent policy shifts enabling increased financial support for civilian nuclear energy projects.

Our next panel brought industry experts and policymakers in a crucial conversation about securing the nuclear supply chain from mining to fuel production. The panel addressed the challenges posed by Russian and Chinese market dominance and explored strategies for the U.S. and its allies to compete more effectively in emerging markets. Discussions covered regulatory challenges, international cooperation, and best practices for maintaining a secure and sustainable nuclear supply chain.

Representatives from allied nations convened at our “Global Nuclear Energy Security Among U.S. Allies” panel to discuss the strategic importance of nuclear energy in national security, energy reliability, and achieving net-zero goals. The panel explored how recent geopolitical shifts have impacted global nuclear energy strategies and highlighted opportunities for collaboration among U.S. allies in the nuclear energy sector.

The summit concluded with an exciting look into the future of nuclear technology in space with our “The Final Frontier: Space Nuclear Propulsion and Power” panel. Experts from NASA and DARPA provided updates on innovative programs developing nuclear thermal propulsion, nuclear electric propulsion, and fission surface power technologies. The panel explored how these advancements will be crucial for long-term space defense, exploration, and habitation goals. Additionally, the discussion touched on the potential role of the private sector in developing these technologies.
