Powering Up Women in Gaming

Powering Up Women in Gaming

Last month, at @Game Developer Conference , I was fortunate enough to join 163 amazing women in gaming to discuss our past, present and future contributions to the industry. And one thing was reinforced, 4K clear: In the dynamic world of gaming, diversity and inclusion are essential for innovation and creativity to thrive.

At #GamingonTikTok, we recognize this transformative impact and are committed to empowering and celebrating it. From Carol Shaw to Rachael 'Valkyrae' Hofstetter, women have been at the forefront of pushing industry boundaries, but not often enough.

That’s why we believe in empowering women to pursue their passion for gaming culture and providing them with a platform to showcase their talent and expertise.  TikTok is far more than just an entertainment platform – it's a vibrant community that has become a hub for gamers from all walks of life to connect, discover, and celebrate their love for gaming culture.

When we talk about gamers on TikTok, we’re breaking away from the stereotypes that many may have in mind. We believe every time a person sees themselves represented and celebrated within games and the industry more widely, the more possibilities that open up to engage with that space either from within the industry or as a player or creator.

Through initiatives like #WomenInGaming – which spotlights talent from all-star developers to casual gamers, and currently stands at over 800million views – we celebrate the achievements of female gamers, streamers, developers, and industry professionals to inspire each other as well as the next generation.

And there are plenty to inspire. And according to the Newzoo Global Gamer Study :

  • Out of the total online population, 72% of women play video games (that figure is 81% for men).

  • Out of the total cohort that says they play video games, 45% are women, and 55% are men.

  • Among players, 36% of women consider themselves a gamer, while 31% of women say that other people call them a gamer.

  • Women and men who play games consider diversity in games important, with 65% of men and 62% of women affirming this point.

  • Nearly half (44%) of female players play only on mobile platforms (exclusive mobile gaming is more popular among women than men).

Let's power-up their voices!   To quote Nora Rekus , “If we share our light with each other, it multiplies and we shine even brighter.”
