Be Prepared...
When we get a forecast catastrophic fire danger, your fire service is warning you about increased risk.
The fact of the matter is in those conditions, low humidity, high winds, a source of ignition – fire behaviour becomes “unpredictable” and with that uncertainty, becomes difficult to fight.
High winds also mean light aircraft may become unreliable due to their effectiveness and simply their ability to operate safely, so the attack methods may be reduced.
You can start by checking the CFS Website for planning your approach to dealing with a fire.
If a fire breaks out the CFS website should be able to provide access to incidents and warnings – The South Australian Government does not currently have an alert type system via the web. If you are in an area that is close to State borders then monitor that States Emergency App or Regional Fire Service web page for incidents in that State.
You can further prepare by having a battery-operated radio that can listen to the local ABC station in your area for warnings and advice. Charge your devices and follow other advice about preparing for bush fires.
Above all remember if you become involved in an emergency call triple zero (000).
The SA Health website has specific information about heat-related illness and provides a number of guides on the topic. Stay protected and hydrated.
So in considering the risk – don’t take any chances, if you are not prepared, by having a bush fire action plan, leave early to a safe place and monitor via the media. Always follow the direction of emergency personnel in an emergency. Stay safe and be prepared.
