Presidential elections in Estonia 2016

In Estonia there are elections going on for a new president. The current election system is set up so that the parliament (101 people) will have 3 voting rounds, where one of the candidates should get 2/3 majority. I assume that each political party supported only their own candidate, that made it quite impossible for a candidate to get the 2/3 majority of the votes.

The next step is that an election committee will vote in 2 rounds. New candidates may register, if they are supported by sufficient members. Yesterday came out that none of the candidates got sufficient votes to win the elections. And the elections will go back to the parliament. The outcome shows that the political parties are not able to come to a compromise, so they don't support candidates else than of their own party. Is that really so hard? Who is so stubborn?

Especially Sundays' elections show that procedure is not failure proof. I believe the procedure should be improved in the future to get a shorter voting procedure. I find it strange that (new) candidates may compete, after earlier rounds. If there are 2 candidates left, then please let there be the minimum majority of 50,1% to get a winner.

And wouldn't it be a better democracy when the people vote directly for their president?
