Pride Month

Pride Month

Pride Month calls for each of us to embrace our diversity by honoring our LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) community, colleagues, family, and friends. A common misconception of Pride Month is that you must fall into one of these specific sexual identities in order to celebrate. Pride Month is inclusive and open for all to celebrate regardless of how you identify. The international observance of Pride Month is celebrated annually during the month of June due to the infamous Stonewall Riots (also known as the Stonewall Uprising) that took place in June 1969 where LGBTQIA+ protestors clashed with police as they protested for their human rights. The Stonewall Riots are considered to be one of the most pivotal moments in queer history as it caught international attention and brought more awareness to the challenges and daily discrimination that the members of the LGBTQIA+ community faced.

Pride Month is commemorated differently throughout many cities across the world and attracts millions of participants. One of the most common forms of celebration is done by peacefully protesting and/or participating in local Pride marches/festivals. These annual Pride festivals serve as a reminder to reflect on the historical significance of the LGBTQIA+ community and tremendous social justice progress that has been made possible by the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies.

This year the Atlanta Pride Festival will return on October 7th-9th. Learn more about the festival and to stay up to date on the latest updates here.

Other ways that you can celebrate Pride Month is by:

  • Updating your company email signatures by adding your pronouns (ex: she/her)
  • Supporting local LGBTQIA+ businesses
  • Educating yourself through books, podcasts, movies, etc. to learn more about how you can contribute to the human rights movement of the queer community

While significant progress has been made since the Stonewall Riots, there are still many challenges, discriminatory policies, and prejudice beliefs the LGBTQIA+ community continues to face today. It is important to boldly celebrate Pride in the workplace by amplifying the voices of the queer community and learning more about individual experiences within your immediate community. In order for society to continually progress, we must recognize the ongoing fight for equality and inclusion among LGBTQIA+ identifying persons, civil rights activists, and LGBTQIA+ advocates. We can all empower the LGBTQIA+ community this Pride Month by intentionally practicing inclusion within our workplace, homes, and communities. Happy Pride!
