PRODUCT-SAFETY LEADERSHIP: CRISIS-MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE--Starting Soon!

Hosted by the University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL) College of Business Administration in cooperation with the SPSP — Society of Product Safety Professionals and ADK Information Services, LLC.

November 7–9, 2023 to be held in-person at the UMSL Business School in Normandy, MO.


The 2023 Crisis-Management Conference has three distinct goals:

  1. To provide expert insights into identifying and responding to crisis situations
  2. To give professions formal training that includes university-level recognition

  1. To provide a network opportunity for professionals from a variety of industries and products to share knowledge on approaches to crisis management

November 7

1. Opening Exercise: Goals and Expectations—led by Marie-Claude Simard , a 20+ year veteran of BRP (Bombardier Recreation Products), Canada. She works at a global level as a strategic and communicative leader in a manufacturing environment.

2. Case Study: A Public-Transportation Crisis—discussed by Dr. George Zsidisin , Ph.D., John W. Barriger, III Professor of Supply Chain Management at the University of Missouri, and one of the leading global scholars on supply chain risk, disruptions, and commodity price volatility management.

3. Compliance and Regulatory Affairs: The Crisis Check List that Guides Action—led by attorneys from Arnold & Porter law firm, Michelle Faust Gillice and Mike Gentine .

4. Risk Assessment: Reducing Risk from Product Defects and Hazards through Building a Rigorous System Before Crisis Occurs—led by Donald Moffett an executive leader for Social Compliance, Product Safety, Quality, and Regulatory Compliance.

5. Managing a Global Crisis: How a Small Team of Engineers Resolved a Crisis with a Simple Modification—with Tim Sullivan 蘇禮勳 , Senior Vice President of Global Quality/Compliance for Spin Master (retired) with a background in engineering design, safety, and quality.

6. Team Exercise: Developing a Crisis-Management Plan Framework for Your Company’s Use—led by Steve Epner , an entrepreneur, innovator, and creative business leader, is an MBA instructor at the Saint Louis University School of Business.


November 8

7. Public-Health Crisis caused by Consumer Products—with Ann Marie Buerkle , an ideal spokesperson for the voices of millions of consumers who may be at unreasonable risks from everyday products. She was a member of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). From 2013 to 2017 she served as a commissioner, and from 2017-2019 was Acting Chairman of the CPSC.

8. Crisis Situations Brandan Mueller is Chair of Husch Blackwell’s Mass Tort and Product Liability Practice Group. He has been involved in litigation in federal and state courts and arbitration proceedings, representing large corporations, insurance companies, privately held companies and 4 individuals

9. Data as a Proactive and Reaction Tool in Crisis Management—with Haitao Li , Professor and Chair of the Supply Chain & Analytics Department and Founding Director of Laboratory of Advanced Supply Chain Analytics at University of Missouri–St Louis (UMSL) specializing in food safety.

10. Product Recall Logistics: Planning for When the Rubber Hits the Road—led by Chris Harvey , Senior Vice President of Crisis Solutions at Sedgwick | Brand Protection as leader of a team of recall strategists and works with clients to help ensure quality implementation and customer integration throughout the entire product recall process.

11. Sometimes Crisis Events End Up in a Court Room Setting: How One Judge Sees His Responsibility as a Jurist—with the Honorable Michael David, a former Circuit Judge of the 22nd Judicial Circuit in Missouri with more than forty years of experience. He continued his career as arbitrator or mediator in private practice.
