Geiger has announced results of its participation in UPS’ carbon neutral program. Two years ago, the Lewiston, Maine, company entered into a contractual carbon neutral program with UPS for all of its shipments in North America.

Since the program’s inception, Geiger has shipped 4,373,847 packages weighing a total of 14,094 pounds. The total Geiger UPS CO2 emissions were 2270.74 metric tons. This amount was offset through the purchase of carbon neutral credits.

“Sustainability is a top improvement priority for Geiger,” says Jo-an Lantz, MAS, chief operating officer for Geiger. “We continue to be pleased to support our sustainability initiative by purchasing this carbon offset for our shipments.”

In its program, UPS calculates carbon emissions for UPS shipments leaving the Geiger facility, then purchases and retires offsets equaling that amount. Offset projects include reforestation, renewable energy (wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric), methane and landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment and destruction of industrial pollutants. These projects are chosen by UPS to ensure that they are high quality and meeting international standards. UPS’s carbon calculation methodology and processes are certified by The CarbonNeutral Company and verified by Societé Generale de Surveillance (SGS).
