Publishing in India

Subject- Publishing of books in India, the lag, the lacks and probable improvements.

Personally having explored a dozen of publishing houses and after interaction with a few dozen authors, the conclusion that I have landed upon is that there are a lot of nuances in the publishing space of India. Literature itself is a dying art as far as reading books is concerned. There is a steep decline in book sales and readership to be precise. The need and want for well crafted stories and plot still exists at large for the entertainment market in India but that has somewhat been forwarded in the hands of solely screen writers. Even today, undoubtedly a lot of books are taken up for movie/series adaptations but due to the influx of mediocre writing, core/classic literature has been dying in India if not the world per say.

Now, a bunch of self-publishing/vanity houses have sprung up, which is definitely a good thing, the only problem being their lack of focus on quality. I have observed a trend of mass publishing and no or minimal marketing of the author and his/her book. If these house start taking up fewer but stronger projects and start focusing on image/brand establishment of authors, it'd really come in handy to them as well as the authors. Quality over quantity would win any day.

Conclusion- Be it traditional/self/vanity publishing houses, instead of volumes, the focus shall be shifted on brand/image establishment of the authors and analyse content even after the market has received it to hand your author proper feedback of his writing.
