THE QUEEN ADELAIDE - A LITERARY LONDON PUB

The Queen Adelaide is a Victorian corner gastro-pub, run by Young’s, a stone’s throw from Wandsworth Park.

Jo and I walked the 20 minutes from East Putney tube station to meet Tony and Angela here for Sunday lunch. We ate at a table, looking out onto the large patio sheltered garden, under a green leaf design lampshade. Between us we devoured two roasts and two fish and chips. I drank Jubel (a peach lager). The shelves near us contained a selection of books. The artwork on the walls throughout the pub was eclectic.

There has been a pub on this site from the eighteenth century. It is named after Queen Adelaide consort to William IV. But the future Queen Adelaide first came to prominence when she married Prince William in 1818. The Queens of England blog pictures the pub’s sign stating ‘Ten or so pubs bear rejoice in the name of Queen Adelaide, a quiet princess who turned a drinking duke into a popular and successful king.’ There are several books about Queen Adelaide such as:
