Raising Money to Fight Dementia

Alzheimer or any kind of dementia is hard not only for people suffering it but for all relatives around. We all are touched by it or we know somebody that did at some point in their lives.

Pure Storage, throught their PureGood foundation, is rising money this year to provide visibility and collect funds to help Alzheimer´s Society in their fight against dementia. To support it, 60 Pure Storage employees will be riding from Carcassonne to Barcelona in a 4 days trip through Andorra and climbing the Pyrenees with road bikes.

Although I love bikes, the longest ride I had ever done before signing in for this challenge was 60KM. So this was far away of something I could accomplish. It was during a meeting with all the Global Sales Engineering team when my manager Seb challenged us to sign for the ride. That was the last push I needed. I decided to buy a road bike this last January and start some training!

First day we start at Carcassonne and rid to Ax-Les-Thermes. It will be 105KM and 2.197M climbing.

Just to be clear, at the time or writing this, the longest ride I have done during training has been 103KM and 1.900M climbing and I was really exhausted. So I still need some training in the next coming weeks.

Second day we go through Andorra crossing to Spain. 85KM with 2.250M climbing:

I think I will suffer a lot in that big climb, especially after the 105KM of day 1.

Third day does not look easy, as we have to go through three ports with a total of 2.925M and 85KM:

And finally, the 4th day to arrive at beautiful Barcelona. I am really scared with this one because it is 137KM (I have never ridden that distance yet) and we also have 2.043M to climb:

I love biking, but I am used to mountain bike. Road bike is hard especially because it is quite dangerous to ride with all cars around. Every day I get annoyed with drives that get very close to you. I think they do not think riding the bike there is a person with a family.

There are only 4 weekends left and I have to push to get to my preparation goal, so I can make sure I complete the challenge. This has been my KM week by week:

Every training, when things get hard, I think about the goal of this challenge, which is collect money to help the fight against Alzheimer.

I will really appreciate everybody collaboration in this funding, no matter the amount. I still need a final push here to reach my target. This is the link where you can collaborate
