Ready to Level Up?
Leadership transcends formal positions of authority and can manifest at any organizational level or in various aspects of life. Ultimately, leadership entails empowering others, fostering collaboration, and generating a positive impact in the pursuit of shared objectives.
Leveling up as a leader is a transformative journey that demands willpower, a thirst for learning, discipline, and a profound commitment to self-empowerment and the empowerment of others.
Allow me to share an example of a leader I had the privilege of working with. Let's refer to him as Tim. Tim served as an engineering leader in a prominent and fast-growing company. Recognizing the need for change within his organization, Tim was brimming with ideas but unsure of where or how to begin. Through our close collaboration, Tim gained a deeper understanding of his strengths and weaknesses, enabling him to leverage his strengths while proactively addressing areas for improvement. This newfound self-awareness empowered him to make well-informed and impactful decisions.
Tim became conscious of his self-imposed expectations to have all the answers and dictate actions to his team members. Consequently, he devoted himself to developing his coaching capabilities. He acquired the skills to facilitate problem-solving, encouraging his reports to actively participate by asking questions, providing support and guidance, rather than issuing orders and making decisions. His active listening, effective questioning, and ability to draw insights from his direct reports improved significantly.
Moreover, Tim learned the art of demonstrating empathy and understanding, meeting the needs of both his direct reports and the entire team. Together with his team, he created clarity on navigating the complex dynamics of the organization and defined actionable steps.
