Recruiting early career talent year-round
Our Summer 2023 Interns are here
We are excited to start our 2023 internship program with 25 talented summer interns across 14 colleges and universities.
Since their start date on May 22, they have been challenged, inspired, and empowered to make a real difference in the communities in which we serve through meaningful and engaging projects and diverse experiences.
This recruitment cycle has been our most competitive yet, as we received a record number of applications – over 3,000.
But how did we get here?
From “event attendee” to intern
To get from Point A (a prospective intern) to Point B (a current intern), there is plenty that happens behind-the-scenes.
Our Early Career Talent team, part of our DEI Office, develops intentional and creative strategies to increase the visibility of Blue Cross NC on college and university campuses and establishes and maintains relationships with university leaders and students.
This is all to help us connect with the next generation of top diverse talent and to encourage well-rounded students to apply for an internship at Blue Cross NC.
More than 45 events attended
This academic year, the Early Career Talent team prioritized transformational partnerships and experiences to support a better candidate experience, which resulted in more than 45 events at 15 North Carolina colleges and universities. The events were both in-person and virtual and included career fairs, resume reviews, mock interviews, professional development workshops, classroom presentations, networking mixers, and more.
Blue Cross NC also led and sponsored several events, including Fireside Chats with our ELT, Inside Scoop sessions to the recruitment process, and a special HBCU night with the Charlotte Hornets where we had more than 450 attendees.
Building stronger connections with NC HBCUs
In alignment with our DEI goals, we partnered with the North Carolina Governor’s HBCU Program for another year, hosting five NC HBCU students from Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina A&T State University.
We also collaborated with Shaw University for their “JC Penney Suit-Up Event,” where students received professional attire at a discounted rate and Winston-Salem State University’s mock madness and resume dash events.
The results
The hard work was worth it. With a few weeks under their belts, we’ve already received great feedback on the selection and progress of our summer 2023 intern cohort.
By modifying our recruitment cycle to recruit and hire students earlier in their college career for the internship program, we brought back four interns from summer 2021 – 2022!
A big thank you to the Early Career Ambassadors and employees who went above and beyond to make this happen! If you meet an intern this summer, be sure to congratulate them on getting from Point A to Point B!

1yI was an intern at BCBSNC back in 2011. The experience inspired me to pursue a career in HR and DEI. I'll always be grateful for the ~5 great years I spent at Blue! 💙

1yI cannot say enough good things about my internship experience with BCBS of NC! I was a summer intern during my MBA program back in 2021, working with the operations team. Blue Cross really lives the culture they preach, and my experience equipped me for post graduation life and long term career success. Congrats to the 2023 internship class!
