Reflecting on my first year as Managing Director of Snap Out

In July 2018, I became the Managing Director of Snap Out. The company was founded in 2012 by Aaron Mason as a digital product studio, which built AI and chatbot products.

We saw the value in doing user and market research at the start of the product development process, where we got to know the market and customers before building anything.

We really learned a lot about the users and customers and could build empathy with them whilst designing and building products to help solve their problem. We checked in with users to test product ideas and prototypes and even evaluated products in a real-world setting to really test our products.

Our work follows the design-thinking framework below (Design Council's image).

Design Council's Double Diamond

The impact that design thinking had on product development was significant enough for Snap Out to pivot toward being a user and market research consultancy. Snap Out now helps other businesses develop digital products using design thinking well as us continuing to work on our own products.

Design thinking and research can be widely applied and we get involved in some really interesting work.

We work with startups looking to disrupt industries with their emerging technology applications, with the public sector seeking to explore local community views and evaluating services and developing digital products as well as consultancies who want to do marketing testing of brand narrative and collateral.

PROJECTS

Since July 2018, we have worked on some very interesting projects, such as:

  • Moses Mobility (Innovate UK): Exploring user needs of a taxi-share technology, a Mobility as a Service product
  • Project Balega (Department for International Development): Looking at Moses in a South African context and identifying the market and user needs
  • Mobility Policy Lab: Understanding the role design thinking and service design can have in transport planning and policy
  • Islington Council: Two projects here; one looking at local community views toward linking datasets and the second looking at Adult Social Care users’ perception toward the use of predictive analytics on novel datasets
  • BEAR London: Identifying customer buying behaviour and market testing of brand narratives, logos and collateral

TEAM

Our team has grown over the past year, where we have welcomed Bethany Austin, our Digital Marketing and Social Media Manager and Emily Peters, who began as an intern and continued with us after her Internship, as Digital Marketing Assistant. We’re about to welcome to the team a User Researcher. Aaron, Snap Out's founder and director, has supported me all the way and has been a great mentor, and may I dare say, friend.

Alongside our internal team, we have built some wonderful, collaborative relationships along the way with accelerator programmes and companies such as digital marketing consultancies, strategy agencies and growth hacking consultancies.

EVENTS AND FORWARD LADIES AWARD

Since January 2019, Snap Out founded and has hosted UXMK, a meetup about user experience and related areas in Milton Keynes. UXMK has grown exponentially and I'm looking forward to seeing it go from strength to strength. Our next event in September looks at UX and AI, which I'm excited about.

We’ve attended lots of events this year too, such as User Research London and SEMLEP events and volunteered at the Work Tree to enable school children to learn more about the world of work. We've run workshops for Silicon Roundabout such as Listening to Customers: A Beginners Guide on How to Do Research and Grant Funding.

We’re currently on the Natwest Accelerator and have been benefiting from their support the past four months. Recently, I’ve been shortlisted by Forward Ladies as Female Entrepreneur in the Midlands category.

This first year of running Snap Out, has been a whirlwind and a rollercoaster ride in its ups and downs. I’m excited about the next year and curious to see what the next 12 months bring!
