Reflection - The Man in the Arena
Have you ever truly immersed yourself in the words of "The Man in the Arena" by Theodore Roosevelt? Have you ever connected with its essence, listening beyond the mere words and resonating with the experiences it encapsulates?
This week, I found myself in the company of a group of leaders, each at the early stages of their journey. We've all been there, navigating the uncharted waters of leadership, grappling with the challenges that come with the territory.
The topics they shared were all too familiar, experiences we've all had or will inevitably encounter. One of the most daunting? Having tough conversations and the fear that accompanies them. It's a universal human experience, one that underscores our shared vulnerability.
These leaders expressed concern that their teams might dismiss them for their nervousness and inexperience in navigating difficult conversations. They worried about stumbling over their words, about the awkwardness that might ensue. Who among us hasn't been there? I certainly have been and will be again!

These leaders are the embodiment of "The Man in the Arena." They are the ones daring to do great things, to lead people, and to have tough talks. They understand the necessity of effort, of stepping into the arena and doing what needs to be done.
Most of our employees have yet to have the opportunity to walk in our shoes to experience the challenges and rewards of leadership. But it's important to remember that we are all human first. Embracing our humanity - being authentic and open about our difficulties is a crucial part of leadership.
When we have to deliver difficult feedback, it's okay to admit it's hard. If self-doubt creeps in, remember "The Man in the Arena". It's not the critics who count, but the effort we put in and the willingness to fumble, stumble, and keep going.
Tell your "Clause"—your saboteur (inner critic)—to take a back seat. Embrace the hard stuff. Embrace what you have an obligation to do—even when it is hard. Lean into it. Do it Messy—and DO IT anyway! BE DARING!
