We will be speaking in CarbonPool's webinar this upcoming Monday, July 22! Alongside experts from CarbonPool , BeZero Carbon , and University of Oxford , the discussion will dig into how buffer pools really work--and how they don't.

Registry buffer pools are the carbon market’s default mechanism to mitigate against carbon credit reversals, and many registries have promised that they can secure a credit's permanence for as many as 100 years. However, the reality is that buffer pools lack many of the fundamental principles required for them to effectively act as a permanence mechanism on that time scale. In fact, there is a real risk that these pools will fail to provide the permanence they promise in the long term.

We have also collaborated with CarbonPool on a white paper that explores this topic further. The paper details the functionality and shortcomings of buffer pools and proposes how in-kind insurance can resolve these challenges. We outline how carbon credit registries can transition from buffer pools to insurance, securing the permanence sought by developers and buyers, and aiding the maturation of the carbon market.

We'll be hosting another webinar on August 1 to dive into the concept of dynamic baselining in forest carbon credits, discussing how this approach can significantly enhance the accuracy and reliability of carbon credit assessments.

Moderated by Nan Pond from Rubicon Carbon , we will bring together experts from Renoster , American Forest Foundation , and Pachama . The session aims to highlight the scientific and practical aspects of implementing dynamic baselining in forest environments. This event will be educational for all and especially insightful for researchers, scientists, carbon credit analysts, forest management professionals, and policy makers interested in advanced carbon credit methodologies. We hope to see you there!

🌲 Public Project Releases

Over time, we make all of our project reviews publicly available. Take a look at our deeply transparent, in-depth analysis of our latest public project releases:

🏆 Company & Market Highlights

Global database of nature-based carbon offset project boundaries

We released our Global Database of Nature-Based Carbon Offset Boundaries. We are incredibly proud of our science team for putting this resource together.

Nature-based solutions (NbS) have become an important component of strategies to combat climate change, primarily through carbon offset strategies. However, the effectiveness of these projects is often questioned due to exaggerated claims and the absence of accessible boundary data. To address this, we created a comprehensive database detailing the geospatial boundaries of 575 nature-based offset projects across 55 countries. Our database, validated with a high accuracy score, serves as a vital tool for verifying the efficacy of carbon offsets and enhancing transparency in NbS initiatives.

Our goal at Renoster is to democratize access to this data in order to increase transparency, and let scientists and policy makers use this to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of different carbon policies. We will continue to highlight which programs/policies have been most effective.

REDD: Neutral's high-integrity, transparent market for REDD+ projects

We partnered with Neutral in launching REDD, a platform that facilitates trading of REDD+ credits. We're proud to play a part in addressing the long-standing challenges in the REDD+ credit market. By establishing a high-integrity, transparent marketplace, REDD aims to correct the issues of opaque pricing and complex due diligence that have historically plagued forest preservation efforts.

Our recent mention in The Guardian

The recent Guardian article spotlighting flaws in certain forest carbon offsets by Finite Carbon has stirred considerable attention and rightly so. As the offsets ratings agency commissioned to review these projects, we have a crucial responsibility to ensure the integrity of carbon credits available in the market.
