Respect Indigenous Women
Above you see a picture of Silver Little Eagle, the 23 year old Northern Cheyenne woman who recently was elected Tribal Council to the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council. Recently she was in Billings, Montana where she was assaulted by two members of her Tribe. She got a temporary restraining order against the two assailants but the Tribal judge would not issue a permanent one. There was a face group which was started shortly after she was elected and it was eventually taken down by Facebook because of all the hate mail and threats Council woman Little Eagle was receiving. Councilwoman Little Eagle stated: "My healing was stripped away.: I wish I know what was hurting them that made them want to hurt me." This is another example of the lateral violence that so many of our Indigenous women face. This is also an example of what happens when you take on the status quo. One of the rules of the dysfunctional family is don't rock the boat and you see it play out in Tribal organizations as well.
On the positive side the chairman of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Kevin Killer, has come out in support of Silver and the Oglala Tribe had a quilt made for her which was also presented to her. There has been a lot of support on social media to support her from throughout Indian country. We must support our young leaders as they are fulfilling the prophecy of the Seventh Generation.
