The Rise of AI: Friend or Foe?

We use AI every day, from setting a timer with Siri to cashing out some amount at the ATM, it is inevitable to imagine our lives without this technology.

while some people are excited about the potential of these intelligent systems to make our lives easier and more efficient, others are worried about the impact it might have on their careers.

Artificial Intelligence;

popularly known as AI is a computer program that can perform tasks that only humans can typically do, such as understanding language, recognizing patterns, and gaining knowledge through experience. In this article, I will highlight some benefits and possible threats of AI, emerging in the tech industry. 

With text-to-image generators gaining popularity on social media; These tools can be used to create a quick variety of images, including artwork, marketing banners, and even diagrams and charts. While it may not provide ideal results, it has the viability to diminish the demand for artists and designers in the years to come.

Not excluding Chat GPT;

which within just a week of its release, reached an impressive milestone of 1 million users. As a general-purpose conversational AI system that can generate answers to questions based on a given input; It performs a wide range of tasks; writing articles, generating content ideas, and coding software and websites as well.

Professionals in the creative industry (writers, designers, artists) and developers have been shivering since the invention of these bots because their jobs may become redundant. Although these AIs are not highly sophisticated, they can improve exponentially.

Now the question is;

Will DALL-E conquer designers, will Chat GPT render programmers jobless? To answer this question, I made a comprehensive inquiry from MIT's new research about AI and the future of work which concluded; “ AI will enable new industries to emerge, creating more new jobs than are lost to the technology” 

This means that the rise of new systems will need professionals to maintain and manage them.

For example, in the late 18th Century, a series of protests took place in the textile industry because they believed the new machines introduced to make work more efficient were replacing their skilled labor and threatening their way of life. Even though the invention automated some operations, more jobs were created around it.

AI is here to stay, and it is always a good idea to stay informed and be proactive about learning new skills and technologies to control the impact of AI on the workforce.
