Robust and Reliable Adhesive Bonding

Robust and Reliable Adhesive Bonding

Robust and reliable adhesive bonding processes are required to prevent part failure and damage. A report about DIN 2304 from the IFAM tells that most adhesive bonding failures are linked to deviation from process guidelines or insufficient process control. In comparison to the actual cost of the adhesive, costs of damages can come at significant multipliers.

Working for the adhesive industry, we often see the adhesive getting blamed in case of debonding during the intended service life. However, based on our experience, also confirmed by the study from IFAM, about 90% of bonding issues are due to lack of bonding knowledge or wrong joint design.

People familiar with welding guidelines know that welds get classified by their safety class and in-process control.

In both welding and adhesive bonding, production steps and the finished product cannot be tested by non-destructive means with one hundred percent certainty for any faults. Therefore, best practice requires all possible errors throughout the manufacture of the finished product must be ruled out by “managing” the whole production process

#DIN2304, translates fundamentals from welding to adhesive bonding. The standard covers safety classification, applicator training, process supervision, and in-process control, to name a few points.

Luminescent Surface Preparation

Bonding of materials involves a sequence of operations, all of which need strict control and complete procedural documentation. Sika continually tries to help customers improve their processes. With the implementation of DIN 6701 for the Rail manufacturing market and its sub-suppliers and the introduction of DIN 2304 for the general manufacturing industry, the topic of safer and controllable processes became even more relevant. At Sika, we go a step further by providing Sika products with peace of mind in better in-process control for surface preparation steps and product traceability tools.
