Room for Everyone

Pride Month is more than rainbow flags and parades; it's a profound celebration of identity, progress, and inclusivity.

This month also serves as an opportunity to reflect on how we can better support and uplift LGBTQIA+ voices  within our profession and in the spaces where we work.  In the spirit of this month’s celebration, some of our team members shared their thoughts on Pride, how they’re planning to celebrate, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion in the design industry.

Why is LGBTQIA+ Pride important to you?

Ben Schultz: Pride month is important to me because it is a moment for my community to come together and appreciate how far we have come, acknowledge the work done by those before us, and recognize the work still to be done to ensure the next generation of LGBTQIA+ individuals have and continue to feel a sense of safety and belonging wherever their lives may take them.

Todd Hensley: I have a daughter who identifies as Queer. The worlds of art, theatre, and music have been places where LGBTQIA+ folks are welcome. The world of design for the built environment benefits from lots of LGBTQIA+ talent. We do well to recognize and celebrate this every chance we get.

Henry Golden-Starr: I have great respect for the history of Pride, its continuing impact on culture, and its significance in making the world a safer place for LGBTQIA+ people.  Seeing unabashed queer joy at my first Pride fest helped in my own coming out, and our annual celebration continues to give me hope while living in a time when it is still unsafe to be transgender.

Travis Shupe: As a proud gay man - LGBTQIA+ pride is important to celebrate a community that supports me for who I am, a community that gave me the courage to live my true life, and a community that fights for equal rights for all individuals.

What can be done within our industry to be more inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ community?

Travis: Generally, I feel like the design community is fairly inclusive, but there is always room for improvement.  Being open and accepting of all individuals regardless of identity, race, religion, gender, etc. is the first step.

Henry: A lot of barriers stem from a lack of understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community.  Through years of activism and visibility we've gotten to a place where people generally have greater acceptance for those who fall under the "L" and "G" letters.  Now it's time to work towards greater understanding and acceptance of the other identities within our community.

Todd: Recognize our peers. Spread the word.

Ben: By continuing to invite new voices to the table and recognizing that everyone has something of value to contribute. Theatre and the arts are for everyone, and everyone should feel empowered and welcomed to participate in the industry in whichever way they feel they can contribute best.

What’s something you’re excited to do in celebrating your identity or the identity of others this Pride Month?

Todd: Attend Chicago's Pride Parade. Read more Carmen Machado.

Henry: I’m proud to be marching with Actors Equity Association in the Chicago Pride Parade.  Catching the Neofuturist’s “Infinite Wrench: 30 Queer Plays in 60 Straight Minutes” is also an annual tradition for me in Chicago.

Travis: I'm always excited to attend the Chicago Pride Parade with hundreds of thousands of my closet friends!

Ben: Attend arts and culture events that celebrate queer visibility.

What activities are you involved in outside of Schuler Shook?

Henry: I'm an actor, I write music, and I love making stuff, regardless of medium.  I'm currently creating a show for the MN Fringe Festival called "Boy Soprano" about being a transgender singer and the vocal changes that come with starting testosterone.

Travis: I've been making wheel-thrown ceramics for much of my adult life.  It's a great distraction from the busy world outside.  Turning a lump of clay into a functional vessel that can last a lifetime is just amazing!

Ben:  I enjoy hiking, photography, and spending time outdoors as much as I like exploring a good museum or attending the opera or symphony.

Todd: I occasionally design lighting for plays, musicals, and operas. I'm a big reader. I enjoy doing yoga every week. I love spending time with my family.
