Sarah Schroder is making HERstory at Seismic Brewing Company

Here at Markstein, we strongly believe that Women’s History Month is celebrated every month of the year. Because, without women, there would be no history to celebrate. Not only do we believe it is important to remember the work of women who have paved the way for us, but it is also important to celebrate the women who are making HERstory today! And while the beer and beverage industry might be male-dominated, women like Sarah Schroder aren’t letting that stop them from making a seat at the table and shaking up the industry.

Sarah is the East Bay Market Manager at Seismic Brewing Company (a brand we are proud to distribute here at Markstein). We were honored to speak with her recently about what it’s like to be a woman in this industry. She has not only made a name for herself in the Bay Area, but has also made a name for the brewery she represents! Sarah is a force to be reckoned with and we look forward to seeing how she continues to thrive in the beer industry. Check out our conversation with Sarah:

Q: What is one of your proudest achievements as a female leader in the beer and beverage industry?

A: One of my proudest achievements as a female leader is growing Seismic Brewing Co. and Tremor California in the East Bay. When I started with the company, we were brand new and no one knew who we were. Now you can walk into most places to find a handle, case, or just chat with someone about our brewery. It feels great knowing I was a part of that.

Q: What challenges have you faced as a woman working in the beer and beverage industry? How has overcoming these challenges made you a better leader?

A: We face many challenges in the beer industry, but as a woman, the biggest obstacle has been to prove my knowledge of beer because of my gender. Overcoming this is not easy, but I assert myself and drop knowledge every time I’m questioned. I do believe I am a better leader from this because it shows any woman who is just starting out that you DO deserve your position and to be respected.

Q. Why did you join the beer and beverage industry? Why have you stayed?

A. I joined the beer industry because I loved the product and the culture. If you’ve ever been to a beer festival, you know what I mean. Also, my company and industry friends (and Markstein!) are why I’ve stayed for 5+ years (as a rep).

Throughout the next few months, we’ll continue to share conversations we’ve had with female leaders in the beer and beverage industry. Do you have experience as a woman in a male-dominated industry? We’d love to hear them and how they have driven you to be successful!
